    HOWARD CLOCK AND MENEELY BELL:
NOTHING E. Howard Clock and Meneely Bell were high quality brand names when Columbia High School was built. Online sources state "E. Howard & Company has been producing high-grade watches, regulators and marine clocks since its inception in 1842, and today E. Howard & Company clocks have evolved into the Holy Grail of manufacturers among the rapidly burgeoning genre of vintage clock and watch collecting."

Despite over 80 years of use, the original tower mechanism is still in place. Originally, the tower clock served as a master clock and each room had an E. Howard wall clock wired as slaves. While almost all of the papers and records of the E. Howard Clock and Watch Company were moved to the Smithsonian Institution in 1977, a few folders escaped into the hands of private collectors. There is where we were able to find many of the original blueprints and specifications of Columbia's tower clock.

It makes sense to mention here the 3000 lb Meneely Bell. There were two Meneely Bells companies which competed with each other (much like the former King of Pizza / Joe's Pizza rivalry in Vauxhall), and this particular bell was made by Meneely of West Troy, NY. Dimensionally, the bell and yoke are approximately 6'3" by 5'10" and weighs 3000 lbs. The bell, which rings in E flat, was recently appraised at over $10,000.
